"The relationship is all. It is a matter of life to the child" Dr Emmi Pikler
Our Philosophy
At The Garden we are guided by Te Wháriki-New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum and inspired by the principles of Dr Emmi Pikler. Our focus is on kotahitanga or unity, the collective action of whánau and kaiako (teachers) working together for the benefit of the tamariki. We provide an inclusive environment that recognises and respects the increasingly multicultural society of Aotearoa as well as ensuring te reo Máori and tikanga Máori are woven into our daily practice.
The Garden is a beautiful, natural environment which encourages a sense of kaitiakitanga, the guardianship of our environment. We respect and protect our natural world through our everyday practice. This enables tamariki to be active and involved explorers, constructors, innovators and thinkers of tomorrow. Our purpose is to provide an authentic, nurturing home away from home where tamariki feel safe and kaiako lead with their heart and inspire a culture of kindness. Kaiako at The Garden are passionate about free, natural, self-initiated play for all tamariki to unfold and develop as nature intended.
Meaningful whanaungatanga or relationships, encourage tamariki to develop a sense of belonging, where they are confident and capable learners, they ask questions, take risks and problem solve.
Kaiako at The Garden are actively involved in ongoing professional development. We engage in collaborative discussions and we research and reflect on best practice from Aotearoa and around the world to be incorporated into our daily practice. The Garden Early Childhood Centre is a space for tamariki and kaiako to be empowered to work together as a community of learners. We also recognise and value the importance of being active participants within the wider community.
